Urban Shamanism

Today I decided to share my view on @EcoTrain's Question of the Week, my first contribution to this tradition. We're invited to talk about the aspects that we consider most important for sustainable and holistic living, and I think that the information we consume, the ideas that we keep and the projects that we support have a lot to do with this topic.

All of our habits and behavioral patterns are based on very profound programs that we can only disarm by questioning our reality, this is true of individuals and collectives. The onslaught of climate change, for instance, is partly the product of the planet's natural transformation, but the enormous influence of the industrial and commercial activities of human civilization on the decline of the situation is undeniable, and these activities are founded on preconceptions that may have been necessary at some point, but are now obsolete and clearly noxious for our evolution. The decisions of our governments and international institutions, often motivated by personal ambitions and selfish interests, arise from our approach to family, society, education, religion, politics, money and other narratives of the human system, all of them in constant interaction among themselves so that it could never be said that the crisis we're currently living is caused by specifically one of them.

In order to live in inner and outer balance, we have to review the basic definitions that we use to describe our world, the way we use our language, the thoughts we strengthen and, generally, the principles with which we live. In other words, we have to carefully observe where we put our faith, the media we use to get our information, the stories and opinions that we believe in. In my experience, the bigger the amount of labels, the greater the amount of prejudices and the less coherence there is between our perceptions and the facts, so the task of those of us who seek to live in growing and healthier connection with the world is to simplify our focus to get to the essence, that which no label can define but that we could sum up as a respectful, quiet and kind communion with our surroundings.

To illustrate the point, imagine the largest build-up of garbage, the worst oil spill or the most destructive wildfire that you can visualize. Can you sincerely believe that such disasters are the product of the actions of only 1% of the world's population? Wouldn't it be more reasonable to think that they've been caused by trillions of individual actions of all kinds of people from every socio-cultural layer?

We're all in this world weaving our stories, emotions and desires together. We've been at it for countless generations. What threads are we using? What design are we activating? Are we increasing the order or the dissonance? The answers imply detailed internal audits, the attentive study of our daily actions. In my perspective, it isn't possible to achieve sustainability as individuals, let alone as a species, without making these exercises, and today's runic message points in the same direction.

Algiz, Service, Unity and Spirit

You have a task to fulfill, fulfill it without worrying over the future; those who do the service and pay the debts have their sustenance assured. Examine the upper corners of your space, the effigies, the symbols and the altars, they may require changes and cleansing. Every death inexorably implies rebirth, keep that in mind for every life cycle, including that of ideas. Abandon fanaticism, true devotion is not blind, it is based on questioning and confirmation; in order to believe one must doubt, but be careful with hesitation, faith must inspire action. Pray in silence and manifest in secret; weave your threads calmly and precisely in the great tapestry, join the softer cords into stronger ropes, prepare yourself for sacrifices and pilgrimages of purification.

Hoy decidí compartir mi visión sobre la Pregunta de la Semana de @EcoTrain, mi primera cotribución a esta tradición. Se nos invita a conversar sobre los aspectos que consideramos más importantes para una vida sostenible y holística, y me parece que la información que consumimos, las ideas que mantenemos y los proyectos que apoyamos tienen mucho qué ver con este tema.

Todos nuestros hábitos y patrones de conducta están basados en programas muy profundos que sólo podemos desarmar al cuestionar nuestra realidad, ésto es cierto de individuos y colectivos. Los estragos del cambio climático, por ejemplo, son en parte producto de la transformación natural del planeta, pero la enorme influencia de las actividades industriales y comerciales de la civilización humana en el empeoramiento de la situación es innegable, y esas actividades están fundamentadas en preconcepciones que quizás en algún momento fueron necesarias, pero que ahora son obsoletas y claramente perniciosas para nuestra evolución. Las decisiones de nuestros gobiernos e instituciones internacionales, con frecuencia motivadas por ambiciones personales e intereses egoístas, surgen de nuestra aproximación a la familia, la sociedad, la educación, la religión, la política, el dinero y demás narrativas del sistema humano, todas en constante interacción entre sí de tal manera que nunca se podría decir que la crisis que ahora vivimos fue causada por alguna de ellas en específico.

Para poder vivir en equilibrio interno y externo, tenemos que revisar las definiciones básicas que usamos para describir nuestro mundo, la forma en que usamos nuestro lenguaje, los pensamientos a los que damos nuestra fuerza y, en general, los principios con los que vivimos. Es decir, tenemos que observar muy bien en dónde ponemos nuestra fe, los medios que usamos para informarnos, las historias y opiniones que creemos. Según mi experiencia, a mayor cantidad de etiquetas, mayor la cantidad de prejuicios y menor la coherencia entre nuestra percepción y los hechos, así que la tarea de quienes buscamos vivir en creciente y sana conexión con el mundo es simplificar nuestro enfoque para ir hacia lo esencial, aquello que ninguna etiqueta puede definir pero que bien podría resumirse como una comunión respetuosa, tranquila y amable con nuestro alrededor.

Para ilustrar el punto, imaginen la mayor acumulación de basura, el peor derrame de petróleo o el incendio más destructivo que puedan visualizar ¿Pueden creer sinceramente que tales desastres son producto de las acciones de un 1% de la población mundial? ¿No es más razonable pensar que han sido ocasionadas por trillones de acciones individuales de todo tipo de personas a todos los niveles socio-culturales?

Todos estamos en este mundo hilvanando nuestras historias, emociones y deseos juntos. Lo hemos estado haciendo por generaciones innumerables ¿Qué hilos estamos usando? ¿Qué diseño estamos activando? ¿Estamos incrementando el orden o la disonancia? Las respuestas implican minuciosas auditorías internas, el estudio atento de nuestras acciones diarias. En mi perspectiva, no es posible lograr sostenibilidad como personas, mucho menos como especie, sin hacer estos ejercicios, y el mensaje rúnico de hoy va por el mismo sendero.

Tienes una tarea por cumplir, cúmplela sin preocuparte por el futuro; quien hace el servicio y paga las deudas tiene el sustento asegurado. Examina las esquinas superiores de tu espacio, las efigies, los símbolos y los altares, puede que requieran cambios y limpieza. Toda muerte inexorablemente conlleva renacimiento, tenlo presente para todo ciclo vital, incluso el de las ideas. Abandona los fanatismos, la verdadera devoción no es ciega, está basada en cuestionamiento y confirmación; para creer hay que dudar, pero cuidado con titubeos, la fe debe inspirar acción. Reza en silencio y manifiesta en secreto; teje con calma y precisión tus hilos en el gran tapete, une los cordeles blandos en sogas más fuertes, prepárate para sacrificios y peregrinajes de purificación.
