When ideas become prisons

Yesterday I talked about the freedom that we obtain through self-imposed limits and today, inspired by the reappearance of Isa, I'll talk about the corrupt side of that coin, Tyranny. Surely everyone dreams of greater liberty, right? So why do tyrannies exist? How do tyrants reach power? How come millions of people give their attention, support and energy to figures that end up abusing their influence to persecute and lock down?

When we think of tyrants, we usually focus on the leaders of repressive governments, but there are tyrants in all areas of our world: the parents that mistreat their children and force them to behave in specific ways that they assume correct, are tyrants; the husband who beats or lies to his wife also is; same goes for the boss who pays meagre wages to his employees, yells at them or forces them to work beyond their schedules. I myself can say that I've been a tyrant at various moments of my life and I can guarantee that all readers have also been at some level, whether you're aware of it or not. All oppressors are predators and feed on their victims literally or figuratively, draining them of their trust and life at the same time as they promise a bright future that they can't nor desire to propitiate.

All tyrants have very particular ideas about what the world should be and, although they don't look like it, they're a lot more repressed than those they seek to control, because these ideas are like bars of a cell they're unable to leave out of fear of what's outside. They defend their ideas with violence because they can't stand being wrong, being questioned causes them panic. Unfortunately, exactly because of that tendency to reconcentrate their perspective, they tend to be highly disciplined in key areas of their lives and exhibit an aura of certainty that provides an unconscious and degenerate feeling of safety that's quite attractive for their followers and victims alike, because we all harbor those same fears within us.

The predator rises to power because, whether we know or not, we've given him access to power. We don't want the responsibility of handling it ourselves, so we leave it to the presence that seems to be more in control of the situation. Deceit and opacity are an essential part of this game, the predator always seeks to isolate his preys to make them easier to hunt, so he exploits niches of division and fosters narratives of hatred and resentment that often already exist in the minds of those he wishes to dominate. But why? What's the prime motivation of this conduct that ultimately always leads to ruin? The answer's simple: need for Love.

If we review the history of all tyrants, we'll see that they were all born and raised in tremendously hostile environments where they lacked the instruction and guidance to resist their own oppressors. No tyrant admits responsibility or investigates his emotions, being vulnerable is the same as being weak; accepting mistakes is virtually impossible. They spend their entire existence looking for genuine understanding, for a way to drain their inner suffering and to be accepted in full, but since they don't understand or accept themselves, they see no other option but to demand from others total obedience to their designs, with blood and fire if necessary.

Now that we're going through a profound paradigm shift in the world, it's important that we study our behavior, that we determine whether we're falling into these traps of the ego and apply the pertinent corrections. Love doesn't respond to opinions or allies itself with ideologies, it has no armies and requires no system of control, it simply is. If we want to be free as a species, we must lower our shields and swords, abandon staunch convictions and open up to the sincere expression of what we are.

Cuando las ideas se convierten en prisiones

Ayer hablaba de la libertad que se obtiene a través de los límites auto-impuestos y hoy, inspirado por la reaparición de Isa, hablaré de la cara corrupta de esta moneda, la Tiranía. Seguramente todo el mundo anhela mayor libertad ¿no? Entonces ¿Por qué existen tiranías? ¿Cómo llegan los tiranos al poder? ¿Cómo es que millones de personas le dan su atención, apoyo y energía a figuras que terminan abusando de su influencia para perseguir y encerrar?

Cuando pensamos en tiranos, usualmente nos enfocamos en los líderes de gobiernos represivos, pero existen tiranos en todos los ámbitos de nuestro mundo: los padres que maltratan a sus hijos y los obligan a comportarse de maneras específicas que ellos consideran correctas, son tiranos; el marido que golpea o miente a su esposa también lo es; el jefe que le paga poco a sus empleados, les grita o los fuerza a trabajar más allá de sus horarios, también. Yo mismo puedo decir que he sido tirano en muchos momentos de mi vida y puedo asegurar que todos los lectores lo han sido a algún nivel, estén o no conscientes de ello. Un opresor es una persona con grandes terrores internos que, en lugar de trabajarlos y solventarlos, los proyecta sobre otros generando una dinámica de dominio puramente por conveniencia personal. Todos los opresores son depredadores y se alimentan de sus víctimas literal o figurativamente, drenándoles la confianza y la vida a la vez que prometen un futuro brillante que no pueden ni desean propiciar.

Todos los tiranos tienen ideas muy particulares sobre cómo debería ser el mundo y, aunque no lo parezca, están mucho más reprimidos que aquellos a quienes buscan controlar, pues estas ideas son como barrotes de una celda de la cual no pueden salir por temor a lo que hay afuera. Defienden sus ideas con violencia pues no pueden soportar estar equivocados, ser cuestionados les genera pánico. Desafortunadamente, justo por esa tendencia a reconcentrar sus perspectivas, suelen ser altamente disciplinados en áreas claves de sus vidas y exhiben un aura de certeza que proporciona un sentimiento inconsciente y degenerado de seguridad muy atractivo para seguidores y víctimas por igual, pues todos guardamos esos mismos temores en nuestro ser.

El depredador llega al poder porque, lo sepamos o no, le hemos dado acceso al poder. No queremos la responsabilidad de manejarlo nosotros, así que se lo dejamos a la presencia que parece estar más en control de la situación. El engaño y la opacidad son parte esencial de este juego, el depredador busca siempre aislar a sus presas para hacerlas más fáciles de cazar, así que explota nichos de división fomentando narrativas de odio y resentimiento que con frecuencia existen ya en las mentes de aquellos a quienes desea dominar. Pero ¿Por qué? ¿Cuál es la motivación primordial de esta conducta que en últimas instancias, siempre lleva a la ruina? La respuesta es simple: necesidad de Amor.

Si revisamos la historia de todos los tiranos, veremos que todos nacieron y crecieron en entornos tremendamente hostiles en los que carecían de la instrucción y guía para resistirse a sus propios opresores. Ningún tirano admite responsabilidad o investiga sus emociones, ser vulnerable es lo mismo que ser débil; aceptar errores es virtualmente imposible. Pasan toda su existencia buscando una comprensión genuina, una forma de drenar su sufrimiento interno y de ser aceptados plenamente, pero como no se comprenden ni se aceptan a sí mismos, no ven otra opción que exigir de otros total obediencia a sus designios, con sangre y fuego si es necesario.

Ahora que estamos en un cambio de paradigma profundísimo en el mundo, es importante que estudiemos nuestra conducta, que precisemos si estamos cayendo en estas trampas del ego y apliquemos los correctivos pertinentes. El Amor no responde a opiniones ni se alía con ideologías, no tiene ejércitos ni requiere ningún sistema de control, sólo es. Si queremos ser libres como especie, debemos bajar los escudos y las espadas, abandonar las convicciones a ultranza y abrirnos a la expresión sincera de lo que somos.
