The structure of the Narrative

Last week I shared insights about Intuition, Purpose and the Tapestry that is the reality we live in. I mentioned the concept of Maya which represents this Tapestry and its illusory nature in Indian philosophies. Other cultures have their own approach to this same idea, even expressed in visual form: for instance, the Egyptians viewed the Eye of Horus as the essential source of all existence from which all of Creation branched out in perfect geometric patterns of interconnected threads; in Jewish Mysticism or Kabbalah, the physical universe is translated in the Etz Chaim or Tree of Life, which in turn reflects four worlds (or five, depending on the interpretation) and four levels of exegesis of sacred texts; the Assyrians and the Germanic tribes also have their own Trees of Life, organized as stepped towers that both emerge from and lead to the Source. In Norse and Greek myths, the Fate of all creatures and peoples is woven by three female deities, Norns for the Norse, Moirae for the Greek, with threads that are exclusive for each entity. All of these images are fully compatible with each other and this is just a tiny summary.

In narratology and comparative mythology, this compatibility among different sources is studied through the concept known as the Hero's Journey or the Monomyth, which describes the progress of all stories through a heroic figure that leaves their home to embark on an adventure where they must resolve a crisis, challenging destiny, finding their True Will and ultimately returning home as a different person, transformed by their experience, to share their wisdom with their people. There are innumerable names of heroes I could invoke as examples but the important thing is that, although each story has its specific angles and elements, all of them are structured the same way, they're fully applicable to our daily lives and even more, they're reflected with precision in all fictions ever created. So if you feel affinity for particular characters in any narrative, study them, because you'll certainly extract valuable information for your own personal processes.

La estructura de la Narrativa

La semana pasada compartí reflexiones sobre la Intución, el Propósito y el Tapete que es la realidad en la que vivimos. Mencioné el concepto de Maya que, en filosofías indias, representa este Tapete y su naturaleza ilusoria. Otras culturas tienen su propia aproximación a esta misma idea, expresada incluso de formas visuales: por ejemplo, los Egipcios veían el Ojo de Horus como la fuente esencial de toda existencia de la cual se ramificaba, en patrones geométricos perfectos, toda la Creación como hilos interconectados; en el Misticismo Judío o Kabbalah, el universo físico es traducido en el Etz Chaim o Árbol de la Vida, el cual a su vez refleja cuatro mundos (o cinco, dependiendo de la interpretación) y cuatro niveles de exégesis de textos sagrados; los Asirios y las tribus germánicas también tenían sus propios Árboles de Vida, organizados como torres escalonadas que emergen y llevan a la Fuente. En la mitologías nórdica y griega, el Destino de todas las criaturas y pueblos es hilvanado por tres deidades femeninas, Nornas para los nórdicos, Moiras para los griegos, con hilos exclusivos para cada entidad. Todas estas imágenes son plenamente compatibles entre sí y este es solo un pequeñísimo resumen.

En narratología y mitología comparativa, se estudia esta compatibilidad entre distintas fuentes a través de un concepto conocido como el Viaje del Héroe o el Monomito, que describe el progreso de todas las historias a través de una figura heroica que abandona su hogar para embarcarse en una aventura en la cual debe resolver una crisis, desafiando los hados, encontrando su Verdadera Voluntad y finalmente retornando a casa como una persona distinta, transformada por la experiencia, para compartir su sabiduría con su gente. Son incontables los nombres de héroes que podría invocar como ejemplo pero lo importante es que, a pesar de que cada historia tiene sus ángulos y elementos específicos, todas están estructuradas de la misma manera, son plenamente aplicables a nuestra vida cotidiana y aún más, se reflejan con precisión en todas las ficciones jamás creadas. Así que si sienten afinidad por personajes particulares en alguna narrativa, estúdienlos, pues con toda seguridad podrán extraer información valiosa para sus propios procesos personales.
