We are all eternal students

I have always been an autodidact. When I was a child I mostly depended on the information that I received from my family and in school, but as I grew, my love for knowledge started setting the pace with which I wanted to advance and in what area. My experience with the regular curriculum of education was fairly unpleasant and therefore, I never finished my formal studies. This was presented to me as a failure for many years and caused me enormous anxieties, but eventually I let it go, because I realized that I frequently handled information that was much more versatile and precise that many people with university degrees and even doctorates under their belts. My posture was appreciated by individuals of all ages and levels of instruction, so there was no problem at all.

Learning on my own allowed me to always choose the interest I wanted to focus on, the level of dedication that I wanted to pour in there and the rhythms that I wanted to use. It is a complex task because we are taught from a very young age to adapt to rules imposed by figures of authority, nobody ever tells us how to work on our own personal authority, nor on the responsibility and discipline associated with it. We are not taught how to establish goals and carry them out either, nor how to direct our will toward a purpose. In my case and, perhaps, in the case of every autodidact, the great ally was Passion. When I felt passionate with a topic or area of knowledge, it was very simple for me to delve into its study and that is how it remains to this day.

With a sufficiently broad vision, we can take everything around us as a form of instruction. The tree, the cloud, the drop of water, the caterpillar and even the street sweeper around the corner are all teachers, potential sources of information and answer which we can access effortlessly, just by honing our perception and opening up to the messages. After all, that is why we are here in this material world, so we can live the physical experience to the maximum and, through it, reach deeper into ourselves.

Todos somos estudiantes eternos

Siempre he sido autodidacta. Cuando era un niño dependía mayormente de la información que recibía de mi familia y en la escuela, pero a medida que fui creciendo, mi amor por el conocimiento comenzó a marcarme la pauta con la cual quería avanzar y en qué área. Mi experiencia con el currículo regular de educación fue bastante desagradable y por ende, nunca terminé mis estudios formales. Esto se me presentó como un fracaso por muchos años y me generó enormes ansiedades, pero eventualmente lo dejé ir, pues me di cuenta de que, con frecuencia, manejaba información mucho más versátil y precisa que muchas personas con titulos universitarios y hasta doctorados en su haber. Mi postura era apreciada por individuos de todas las edades y niveles de instrucción, así que no había ningún problema.

Aprender por mi cuenta me permitió siempre elegir el interés en el cual quería enfocarme, el nivel de dedicación que quería poner allí y los ritmos que quería usar. Es una tarea compleja porque nos enseñan desde muy jóvenes a adaptarnos a normas impuestas por figuras de autoridad, nunca nos hablan de trabajar nuestra propia autoridad personal, ni la responsabilidad y disciplina asociadas a ella. Tampoco nos muestran cómo establecer objetivos y llevarlos a cabo, ni cómo dirigir nuestra voluntad hacia un propósito. En mi caso y, quizás, en el de toda otra persona autodidacta, el gran aliado fue la Pasión. Cuando me apasionaba con un tema o área de conocimiento, era muy sencillo aplicarme a su estudio y ese continúa siendo hasta hoy.

Con una visión suficientemente amplia, podemos tomar todo lo que nos rodea como una forma de instrucción. El árbol, la nube, la gota de agua, la oruga o el barrendero que pasa por la esquina son todos maestros, potenciales fuentes de información y respuesta a las que podemos acceder sin esfuerzo, tan solo afinando nuestra percepción y abriéndonos a los mensajes. Después de todo, para eso estamos en este mundo material, para vivir al máximo la experiencia física y, a través de ella, llegar más profundo en nuestro interior.
