The more you know, the less you know

According to Plato, his teacher Socrates said: "I know that I know nothing". This paradox may be reconciled from two perspectives. Imagine that you are walking across a single hallway with doors on either side. Each door opens to a different realm of knowledge, perhaps a dedicated skill or a branch of study. Suppose you open one door and find abundant information on a certain topic and you stay there until you feel that you have a handle on that topic, then get back to the hallway and open another door to find the same abundance but focused on a different topic. You do this a number of times and then return to the first door you opened, and that topic you thought you knew so well is suddenly revealed to be a lot more expansive than you originally assumed, because the data you collected in the other doors transformed your approach to that first area of exploration. In short, the more you investigate, the more you understand how little you truly know about anything.

Now suppose you open the first door and stay there, perhaps because you think the information therein is all you will ever need for your entire life. You end up convincing yourself that you know this topic backwards and forwards, it gives you a sense of certainty. Why explore any other doors if this one suits you just fine? Since you do not investigate, you have nothing to compare, to expand on the understanding that you assume you have reached.

In both cases, you would reach a conception of ignorance: the first is based on asking questions, relying on curiosity and embracing uncertainty; the second is based on formulating answers, depending on personal belief and clinging to certainty. When we value our opinions so much that we disregard the perspectives of others, we are staying in the first room. When we admit other possibilities, we are taking a stroll through that hallway. Knowledge can be an iron ball and chain, or it can be a pair of wings. Too much knowledge about something (verifiable or not) and we lose our capacity to adapt our views, to learn. However, if we see the Universe with childlike naiveté, we can always include new information, expand our thinking and grow.

Mientras más sabes, menos sabes

Según Platón, su maestro Sócrates dijo: "Sé que no sé nada". Esta paradoja se puede reconciliar desde dos perspectivas. Imagina que estás caminando por un único pasillo con puertas a ambos lados. Cada puerta se abre a un reino distinto de conocimiento, quizás una habilidad dedicada o una rama de estudio. Supón que abres una puerta y consigues abundante informción sobre un tema particular, y te quedas allí hasta que sientes que tienes dominio sobre ese tepa, luego vuelves al pasillo y abres otra puerta para encontrar la misma abundancia pero enfocada en un tema distinto. Haces esto algunas veces y luego vuelves a la primera puerta que abriste, y ese tema que pensabas que conocías tan bien de pronto se revela muchísimo más expansivo de lo que asumiste originalmente, porque los datos que obtuviste en las otras puertas transformaron tu acercamiento a esa primera área de exploración. En otras palabras, mientras más investigas, más comprendes lo poco que sabes realmente sobre nada.

Ahora supón que abres la primera puerta y te quedas allí, quizás porque piensas que la información allí es todo lo que necesitarás por tu vida entera. Terminas convenciéndote de que conoces este tema de atrás para adelante, te da un sentimiento de certeza ¿Para qué explorar otras puertas si esta te cuadra perfectamente? Ya que no investigas, no tienes forma de comparar, de expandir el entendimiento que asumes que has alcanzado.

En ambos casos, llegarías a una concepción de ignorancia: la primera está basada en hacer preguntas, confiando en la curiosidad y abrazando la incertidumbre; la segunda se basa en formular respuestas, dependiendo en las creencias personales y aferrándose a la certidumbre. Cuando le damos tanto valor a nuestras opiniones que desdeñamos las perspectivas de otros, nos estamos quedando en la primera habitación. Cuando admitimos otras posibilidades, estamos dando un paseo por el pasillo. El conocimiento puede ser un grillete de hierro o un par de alas. Demasiado conocimento sobre algo (verificable o no) y perdemos nuestra capacidad de adaptar nuestras visiones, de aprender. Sin embargo, si vemos el Universo con ingenuidad infantil, siempre podemos incluir nueva información, ampliar nuestro pensmiento y crecer.
