The immense liberty of self-imposed boundaries

I've always been fascinated by the complex mechanisms of watches, but a year ago, while I was training for the first time with a real Katana, a weapon whose level of danger demands great care and respect, I understood something essential about all highly precise systems. In a watch, the gears and cogs are arrayed in such a compact space that they seem to be firmly clasped together, but on a closer look we'll find that they're actually separated by small spaces that allow them to rotate and prevent mechanical damage; similarly, the Katana seems to be solidly embraced by its wooden sheath, but it does in fact have a certain slack that allows the swordsman to draw and sheathe the blade silently and fluidly. Neither the watch nor the sword could fulfill their purpose without that range of tolerance.

Later, while I was reading Frank Herbert's "Dune", that idea came to me again in the image of the Fremen, nomad inhabitants of a tremendously hostile desert who, through the use of strict tribal rules and suits that catch their body's moisture, are able to survive and even thrive in a deadly environment: the desert doesn't forgive mistakes or laxity, but their enormous collective discipline provides them great freedom of movement.

The Japanese have a saying: "Sooner or later, discipline always beats intelligence." We may have very scarce resources or find ourselves in adverse environments, but if we keep order in our habits, coherence in our actions and rectitude of principles, we can take advantage of the restrictive context and in fact accelerate our evolution. Similarly, we may have access to ample resources and operate in versatile contexts, and still fail in whatever we attempt to do for lack of a clear focus and the persistent and organized attitude to harness the advantages that surround us. Overindulgence and hedonism always spell collapse, we have infinite examples of this in history, including the current moment we're living.

When we impose on ourselves boundaries deliberately, consciously and willingly, we gain openness and fluidity, because our energy is concentrated and our efficacy increases. In this we must also be consisted in order to avoid oppression, but when we accomplish the appropriate balance, we can feel it in our entire system. Like a watch, we become more precise; like a sword, we express greater power and elegance. Then, no contextual boundary can restrict us, no mountain proves too tall. Like Athena, our Victory is always assured.

La inmensa libertad de los límites auto-impuestos

Siempre me han fascinado los complejos mecanismos de los relojes, pero hace un año, mientras entrenaba por primera vez con una Katana real, un arma que por su peligrosidad demanda gran cuidado y respeto, comprendí algo esencial sobre todos los sistemas altamente precisos. En un reloj, los engranajes están dispuestos en un espacio tan compacto que parece que estuviesen firmemente unidos entre sí, pero una mirada más cercana revelará que en realidad están separados por pequeños espacios que les facilitan la rotación e impiden daño mecánico; de igual forma, la Katana parece estar sólidamente abrazada por su vaina de madera, pero de hecho tiene cierta holgura que le permite al espadachín desenvainar y envainar silenciosa y fluidamente. Ni el reloj ni la espada podrían cumplir su función sin ese rango de tolerancia.

Más adelante, durante mi lectura de "Dune" de Frank Herbert, esta idea se me volvió a presentar en la imagen de los Fremen, habitantes nómadas de un desierto sumamente hostil que, mediante el uso de estrictas normas tribales y de trajes que atrapan su humedad corporal, pueden sobrevivir e incluso prosperar en un entorno mortífero: el desierto no perdona errores o laxitud, pero su enorme disciplina colectiva les proporciona una gran libertad de movimiento.

Los japoneses tienen un dicho: "La disciplina tarde o temprano vence a la inteligencia". Podemos contar con recursos muy bajos o encontrarnos en entornos adversos, pero si mantenemos orden en nuestros hábitos, coherencia en nuestras acciones y rectitud de principios, podemos sacar provecho del contexto restrictivo y de hecho acelerar nuestra evolución. De igual forma, podemos tener acceso a amplios recursos y operar en contextos versátiles, y aún así fracasar en lo que nos propongamos por falta de un enfoque claro y de la actitud persistente y organizada para aprovechar las ventajas que nos rodean. La sobreindulgencia y el hedonismo siempre vaticinan colapso, tenemos infinitos ejemplos en la historia, incluyendo el momento que estamos viviendo ahora.

Cuando nos imponemos límites deliberada, consciente y voluntariamente, ganamos apertura y fluidez, pues nuestra energía está concentrada y nuestra eficacia incrementa. También en esto debemos ser consistentes para no caer en opresión, pero cuando logramos el balance apropiado, lo podemos sentir en todo nuestro sistema. Como el reloj, nos volvemos más precisos; como la espada, expresamos mayor poder y elegancia. Luego, ninguna frontera contextual puede restringirnos, ninguna montaña es demasiado alta. Como Atenea, tenemos siempre asegurada la Victoria.
