Between desire and necessity

How many times do we say that we want this or that? And how many times do we confuse what we want with what we need? It's quite common, we've all gone through those moments of anger when we tell ourselves that the world is being unfair to us for not giving us what we seek, when the lack of interest of others in our tastes and experiences offends us. We tell ourselves that we need that attention, that extra cooperation from the world, that external validation, but there's no such need and what's worse, repeating these stories to ourselves prevents us from appreciating what we have and efficiently tending to the verifiable demands or our being.

We all breathe, eat, drink, sleep, feel. These are vital compulsions, we may postpone them somewhat or attempt to repress them but not ignore them, they're needs that we must cover in order to survive, we get sick and die if we don't. By extension, everything that we require to cover these needs, such as having a safe place to spend the nights, access to food and drink, company or our version of beauty, is also a compulsion. Due to the way we've structured our society, fulfilling these demands to the fullest implies having a job, producing money regularly and contributing to the public management of our territories limited by borders. This is where the concepts of need and desire start to blur, because social constructs are narratives and narratives can be believed or not, told or not. Strictly, we shouldn't need to have money in order to eat, sleep or feel safe, money's just a tale that we tell ourselves and each other and which allows us to exchange energy among strangers who don't even speak the same language, but it's a powerful tale, the most powerful in the world. And it's powerful because it also allows us to obtain and live things that go well beyond our basic compulsions, things that we've also persuaded ourselves that we need: brand clothing, a potent smartphone, concerts, wine, fast food, automobiles, social influence, popularity, etc.

And so, what we think we own owns us instead, it's established as an existential prerogative and prevents us from being in the Now, because we're always looking for something more, remembering what we didn't have or what we could've done but didn't, thinking of what we should get in some hypothetical future, while life goes by us and that which is right before our eyes remains foreign. It's important to always keep in mind that there are millions in this world who don't have their most basic requirements covered, while others enjoy such security that we can be here, sharing our experiences with people all over the planet. We only have to look around us to find infinite reasons to be thankful for our fortune, but for that, we have to put needs and wants in their right place.

Entre el deseo y la necesidad

¿Cuántas veces decimos que queremos ésto o aquello? ¿Y cuántas veces confundimos lo que queremos con lo que necesitamos? Es algo muy común, todos hemos pasado por esos momentos de molestia en los que nos decimos que el mundo está siendo injusto por no darnos lo que buscamos, en los que la falta de interés de otros por nuestros gustos y experiencias nos ofende. Nos decimos que necesitamos esa atención, esa cooperación extra del mundo, esa validación externa, pero no existe tal necesidad y lo que es aún peor, repetirnos estas historias nos impide apreciar lo que tenemos y atender eficazmente las demandas verificables de nuestro ser.

Todos respiramos, comemos, bebemos, dormimos, sentimos. Estas son compulsiones vitales, podemos postergarlas un poco o intentar reprimirlas pero no ignorarlas, son necesidades que debemos cubrir para sobrevivir, nos enfermamos y morimos si no lo hacemos. Por extensión, todo aquello que requiramos para cubrir esas necesidades, como tener un sitio seguro en dónde pasar las noches, acceso a alimento y bebida, compañía o nuestra version de belleza, es también una compulsión. Debido a la forma en la que hemos estructurado nuestra sociedad, cumplir con estas demandas a plenitud implica tener un trabajo, producir dinero regularmente y contribuir a la administración pública de nuestros territorios delimitados por fronteras. Acá es donde el concepto de necesidad y el de deseo comienzan a confundirse, pues los constructos sociales son narrativas y las narrativas pueden creerse o no creerse, contarse o no contarse. Estrictamente, no tendríamos que tener dinero para poder comer, dormir o sentirnos a salvo, el dinero es sólo un cuento que nos echamos y que nos permite intercambiar energía sin conocernos ni hablar el mismo idioma siquiera, pero es un cuento poderoso, el más poderoso del mundo. Y es poderoso porque nos permite también obtener y vivir cosas que van mucho más allá de nuestras compulsiones básicas, cosas que también nos hemos convencido de que necesitamos: ropa de marca, un teléfono potente, conciertos, vino, comida rápida, automóviles, influencia social, popularidad, etc.

Así pues, lo que creemos poseer nos posee a nosotros, se establece como prerrogativa existencial y nos impide estar en el Ahora, pues siempre estamos buscando algo más, recordando lo que no tuvimos o lo que pudimos hacer pero no hicimos, pensando en lo que deberíamos conseguir en algún futuro hipotético, mientras la vida pasa por nosotros y aquello que tenemos justo frente a nuestros ojos nos es ajeno. Es importante siempre tener en cuenta que millones en este mundo no tienen sus requerimientos más básicos cubiertos, mientras que otros gozamos de tal seguridad que podemos estar aquí, compartiendo nuestras experiencias con gente en todo el planeta. Vasta conque miremos a nuestro alrededor para conseguir infinitas razones para agradecer nuestra fortuna, pero para eso, tenemos que poner necesidades y anhelos en su justo lugar.
